Launch tips from my Product Hunt adventure

Hi folks,

In this post, I will share my experience on how we got listed as the third-best product of the day.

If you will launch on Product Hunt for the first time, check out this post.

Choosing the right time for launch.

ProductHunt is so competitive that choosing the right time is crucial both to get your product to as many people as possible and to score points.

It is a known fact that people visit ProductHunt more on weekdays. This is a good opportunity to show your product to more people.

What about competition? Since more products are launched on weekdays, it becomes very difficult to get a degree and be visible in the top ranks in a launch you make.

It would be pretty nice to leverage data for this. And so we did. 😏

We reviewed the analysis of Product Hunt launches on wiki.launchkitty.com and decided to launch it on Thursday.

Rank higher with fewer upvotes

The product with the most votes is listed higher in the Product Hunt.

This is not exactly so. Later on the launch day, one of the products made a big attack and suddenly became our closest competitor. We fought each other for hours for third place.

At the end of the day, although our competitor received much more likes and comments than us, Product Hunt placed us in 3rd place.

But how?

Product Hunt can detect if the upvotes and reviews you receive are organic, and can even delete votes it knows are not organic. (I witnessed that our closest competitor's votes decreased many times on the launch day.) So make sure that the upvotes you collect and the comments you receive are organic.

The best way to convince Product Hunt that your upvotes and reviews are organic is to direct people to Product Hunt, not the product page. In this way, even if your number of likes and comments is lower than your competitor, Product Hunt will give you your badge if you deserve it.

It was a little bit  risky, but worked well

Building an audience before your launch

I gained many new followers on Product Hunt on launch day and followed-back many of them. Within a few weeks, I understood what that meant.

When people you follow on Product Hunt launch a new product, you  get an email announcing the launch directly. This is a nice way to promote your product to a wider audience. Especially if you've make a meaningful connection (Perhaps a candid comment on the product of the maker you're starting to follow could provide that).

We decided to launch heybooster very quickly and got it in a short time, unfortunately we didn't have the time or capacity to implement such a strategy. But this strategy is worth trying if you have enough time before the launch.

Building a Product Hunt launch, or otherwise, I would love to chat with you about any growth project.

Keep in touch!
